Lacquered Wood Flip-Top Boxes

Flip-top boxes in lacquered wood, made to your dimensions and your logo. A rigid shell cannot have a folding lip, so a lacquered flip-top is a hinged lid with a rebated front edge instead. It achieves the same look and it is a different mechanism, which is worth being clear about at briefing.

What this construction is

A flip-top box has a lid hinged at the back with a front lip that tucks down over the face of the base. The tuck holds it closed without a magnet or a catch, so the closure costs nothing and there is nothing in it to fail.

Lacquered wood on this construction, specifically

A rigid shell cannot have a folding lip, so a lacquered flip-top is a hinged lid with a rebated front edge instead. It achieves the same look and it is a different mechanism, which is worth being clear about at briefing.

Getting the fit right

The lip depth is the entire mechanism. Too shallow and the lid lifts in a bag; too deep and the customer has to fight it open, which is the last impression a gift box should leave.

The mistake to avoid

The lip is also the part that wears, because it flexes every time the box opens. In a thin or brittle covering it cracks along the fold within months of daily use, and the fix is the material rather than the design.

Where it is used

Retail and e-commerce where cost matters and the box will be opened a handful of times. It is the cheapest positive closure there is.

Why lacquered wood

A wood carcass built up in layers of lacquer and polished back to a piano finish. This is the heaviest and most formal thing we make.

Putting your logo on lacquered wood

Lacquer is engraved, or carries an inlaid metal plate. Foil does not bond reliably to a polished lacquer surface.

Cutting the interior in lacquered wood

The interior is a separate lined tray dropped into the carcass, so the lining material is chosen independently of the shell.

Dust with a dry microfibre cloth. Polish only with a product made for lacquer.
