What this construction is
A hinged-lid box has the lid attached to the base along one edge, so it opens like a shell and stays with the box. It is what most people picture when they think of a jewellery box, and it is the only construction where the lid cannot be put down in the wrong place.

Getting the fit right
The hinge decides everything. A scored fold in the covering material costs nothing and softens after years of daily opening; a metal hinge survives constant use and is visible. Which one is right depends on how many times the box will be opened, not on how it looks in a photograph.
The mistake to avoid
A lid that does not sit flush when closed is the fault customers notice without being able to name it. It is caused by the hinge line being a fraction off, and it is caught by checking the closed box on the sample rather than the open one.

Why lacquered wood
A wood carcass built up in layers of lacquer and polished back to a piano finish. This is the heaviest and most formal thing we make.

Lacquer is engraved, or carries an inlaid metal plate. Foil does not bond reliably to a polished lacquer surface.
Cutting the interior in lacquered wood
The interior is a separate lined tray dropped into the carcass, so the lining material is chosen independently of the shell.
Dust with a dry microfibre cloth. Polish only with a product made for lacquer.
