What this construction is
A drawer box is a sleeve with a tray that pulls out of it. Opening it is a two-handed, deliberate movement, which slows the moment down — that is the reason brands choose it rather than any practical advantage.
Lacquered wood on this construction, specifically
Wood on wood runs well and a lacquered drawer has real weight behind it, which is most of the appeal. The runner surfaces should be sealed but not lacquered to a gloss, or the drawer sticks in humidity.
Getting the fit right
The runner clearance decides whether it feels expensive or cheap. Too tight and the drawer sticks; too loose and it rattles and falls out when the sleeve is tipped. A pull tab or a thumb notch is part of the design, not an afterthought.
The mistake to avoid
A drawer with no stop will come all the way out in a customer's hand. A stop is a small detail that has to be designed in, and it is the most common thing missing from a first drawing.
Where it is used
Gifting and premium retail, particularly where the brand wants an unboxing that takes a few seconds longer. It suits flat pieces better than tall ones.
Why lacquered wood
A wood carcass built up in layers of lacquer and polished back to a piano finish. This is the heaviest and most formal thing we make.
Putting your logo on lacquered wood
Lacquer is engraved, or carries an inlaid metal plate. Foil does not bond reliably to a polished lacquer surface.
Cutting the interior in lacquered wood
The interior is a separate lined tray dropped into the carcass, so the lining material is chosen independently of the shell.
Dust with a dry microfibre cloth. Polish only with a product made for lacquer.
