What this construction is
A two-tier box has a removable upper tray sitting above a lower compartment, so a set is shown in layers rather than crowded onto one surface. Lifting the top tray is the second half of the reveal.
Rigid board on this construction, specifically
Printed board is the economical two-tier build, and it works if the lower compartment is deep enough. Board trays flex, so a wide tray wants a centre support or it bows onto the pieces below.
Getting the fit right
The upper tray needs a finger recess or a ribbon pull, and the lower compartment has to be deep enough that the tray does not sit on the pieces below it. Both are easy to get wrong on a drawing and obvious on a sample.
The mistake to avoid
A tray with nothing to lift it by is the standard fault. Customers end up tipping the box out, which is the opposite of what a two-tier box is for.
Where it is used
Bridal and gift sets, watch-and-strap sets, and any programme where a customer receives several pieces that should not be seen all at once.
Why rigid board
Board wrapped in paper or textured stock. The lightest and most shippable of the constructions, and the one that gives the widest colour and texture range.
Putting your logo on rigid board
Board is the best surface of all for print. Foil, deboss, spot varnish and flat colour all work, and fine typography holds.
Cutting the interior in rigid board
A board box is built around its insert; the insert is usually a die-cut foam or board platform wrapped in the lining material.
Keep dry. Board recovers from a light knock better than lacquer, but a wet mark is permanent.
