What this construction is
A gatefold box opens as two doors from the centre rather than as a single lid, so the interior is revealed outward from the middle. It is the most theatrical opening we make and the one clients remember.
Lacquered wood on this construction, specifically
Rigid doors on a lacquered gatefold meet at a machined edge, so the centre line is a hairline rather than a join. It is the most precise version of this construction and it needs magnets — there is no friction to hold it.
Getting the fit right
The two doors have to meet exactly at the centre line, and they have to stay met. A gatefold that stands slightly open at the join reads as broken, so the closure — magnets, a ribbon or a lip — is not optional here.
The mistake to avoid
Two doors means two hinges and twice the chance of one sitting proud. Check the closed box at the centre line on the sample; that join is the only thing anyone looks at.
Where it is used
Sets, presentation pieces and anything where the opening is meant to be an event — bridal, corporate gifting and launch packaging in particular.
Why lacquered wood
A wood carcass built up in layers of lacquer and polished back to a piano finish. This is the heaviest and most formal thing we make.
Putting your logo on lacquered wood
Lacquer is engraved, or carries an inlaid metal plate. Foil does not bond reliably to a polished lacquer surface.
Cutting the interior in lacquered wood
The interior is a separate lined tray dropped into the carcass, so the lining material is chosen independently of the shell.
Dust with a dry microfibre cloth. Polish only with a product made for lacquer.
