Velvet Magnetic Flap Boxes

Magnetic flap boxes in velvet, made to your dimensions and your logo. Velvet is thick enough to hide a magnet completely, which is an advantage here — no bump shows through as it can on a thin material. The flap does need a slightly stronger magnet because the pile holds the two faces apart.

What this construction is

A magnetic flap box has a lid that folds over the front and holds shut on a hidden magnet, with no visible catch anywhere. It is the cleanest closure line available and it holds firmly in a bag or a mailer.

Velvet on this construction, specifically

Velvet is thick enough to hide a magnet completely, which is an advantage here — no bump shows through as it can on a thin material. The flap does need a slightly stronger magnet because the pile holds the two faces apart.

Getting the fit right

Magnet strength is matched to the weight and length of the flap. A long flap needs two magnets spaced apart rather than one strong one in the middle, or the corners lift while the centre holds.

The mistake to avoid

Magnets set too close to the surface show as a bump through a thin covering. It is caught on the sample, and it is the reason the covering material has to be decided before the magnet position is fixed.

Where it is used

Retail and e-commerce packaging where the box travels, and anywhere a visible clasp would break the look of the design.

Why velvet

Velvet is a cut-pile fabric with a longer, softer nap than microfibre suede. It is the traditional jewellery lining and still the one most buyers associate with a gift.

Putting your logo on velvet

Velvet does not hold a hot-stamp the way board or leatherette does. A metal plate, or a lid card, is the more reliable way to carry a logo on a velvet exterior.

Cutting the interior in velvet

A velvet slot closes on the shank under its own spring. The pile hides the cut edge, so the slot can be made slightly generous without looking loose.

Brush with the pile. Avoid pressing a heavy piece into the same spot for months at a time, or the pile takes a set.

Frequently asked questions

Is velvet a good choice for a magnetic flap box?

Velvet is thick enough to hide a magnet completely, which is an advantage here — no bump shows through as it can on a thin material. The flap does need a slightly stronger magnet because the pile holds the two faces apart.

How does velvet wear on this construction?

Brush with the pile. Avoid pressing a heavy piece into the same spot for months at a time, or the pile takes a set.

Can it be made in our colour?

Yes — the velvet is matched to a Pantone reference or a physical swatch, and confirmed on a sample.

What logo methods suit velvet?

Velvet does not hold a hot-stamp the way board or leatherette does. A metal plate, or a lid card, is the more reliable way to carry a logo on a velvet exterior.

Can I see it before ordering?

Yes. A physical pre-production sample is made to your specification and the bulk run is held to the sample you approve.
