Why it is the safe answer
A shop selling yellow gold, white gold, silver and coloured stones from one counter needs one box that does not fight any of them. Taupe is that box. Nothing looks wrong in it, which is a real virtue when one specification has to cover everything.
What it costs you
Nothing looks wrong in it and nothing looks remarkable either. A brand that wants to be remembered by its packaging will not be remembered for taupe, and that is a trade worth making consciously rather than by default.
The usual fix is a taupe exterior with a stronger interior colour, which keeps the safety and adds something to see.
How it behaves
It hides marks better than grey and better than any pale colour, which is its second practical advantage. On an open counter it is one of the longest-lasting colours we make.
In print it is easy to hold across a run and creases show almost no line at all — for a folded box in a neutral, it is the safest specification on the list.
Warm taupe against cool greige
There is a range inside the word, from a brown-leaning taupe to a nearly grey greige, and they behave differently against gold. Send a physical reference rather than the word.
Matching it across a set
A box, a bag and a card in the same colour are three different materials taking the same dye or ink, and they will not match by number. They are matched by eye, and that only works if they are made in one run.
At a glance
| Point | What to know |
|---|---|
| Strength | One box that serves gold, silver and coloured stones equally |

Frequently asked questions
Why choose taupe?
When one box has to serve gold, silver and coloured stones from the same counter. Nothing looks wrong in it.
What is the downside?
It is not memorable. If packaging is meant to be part of the brand, taupe will not carry that on its own.
How do I keep it from looking bland?
A taupe exterior with a stronger interior colour. It costs nothing extra when specified from the start.
Is taupe the same as greige?
They sit at either end of the same range — one leans brown, the other grey. Send a physical reference rather than the word.
