It is a hide colour
Cognac, tan and chestnut developed as the natural colours of vegetable-tanned leather. In hide they look right because they are what the material does. Reproduced in leatherette they read as a leather effect rather than a colour, which is a different and lesser thing.
Where the budget will not carry hide, a neutral or a dark colour usually looks better than an imitated tan.
How it ages
Real tan darkens and deepens with handling and light, unevenly, and that patina is the reason people choose it. A box in daily use will not match a boxed one after a year. That is the material behaving correctly, and it should be explained to a client rather than treated as a fault.
What it does for the piece
Warm and mid-toned, so it flatters yellow gold and warm stones and it is quietly good for men's jewellery and watches, where a black box can look severe. Against diamonds and platinum it is too warm and too low in contrast.
Menswear and watches
This is where tan and cognac earn their place. A cognac hide watch box next to a leather-strapped watch is one of the few packaging decisions that needs no explanation to a customer.
Matching it across a set
A box, a bag and a card in the same colour are three different materials taking the same dye or ink, and they will not match by number. They are matched by eye, and that only works if they are made in one run. Ordering them separately is the single most common reason a set looks slightly wrong.
