What it is good at
Flat pieces. A chain, a pair of studs, a card, a thin bracelet — anything that lies down. It stores flat, which means a shop can keep a season's worth in a drawer rather than a stockroom.
It also prints edge to edge across the whole surface, so a small brand gets a lot of visible branding for very little money.
Why it is made in board
The curve comes from score lines in a single sheet. Board takes that score and holds the shape; a wrapped or covered material either will not fold or will not tuck.
Where a client asks for a pillow box in velvet or leather, what they usually want is a curved rigid box — and that is a cylinder box, which is a different construction entirely.
Where it fails
Overfilling. Put a ring box or anything with depth into a pillow box and the tucked ends split, usually in a customer's bag rather than in the shop.
It also offers almost no protection. It is a presentation wrapper, not a protective box, and it should not be the only thing between a piece and a courier.
Board weight and score depth
These two decide everything. Too light and it flattens in a handbag; too heavy and the ends will not tuck. It is worth approving on a physical sample with the actual piece inside rather than empty.
Finishing
Matte lamination is the safe specification because the tucked ends are handled every time the box is opened. Foil and spot UV both work on the flat sheet before folding, which makes branding cheap on this construction.
