Packaging for Pawnbrokers

A pawnbroker holds two kinds of stock that need opposite things: pledges that must stay identified and untouched, and resale stock that has to look like retail jewellery.

Pledge storage

A pledge is held for a fixed term, has to be findable, and has to come back in the condition it went in. A plain, uniform box with a label area does this, and uniformity is what makes a safe searchable.

Nothing about a pledge box needs to be attractive. It needs to stack, label and close.

Resale presentation

Resale stock competes with a jeweller's window, and a piece presented in a pledge envelope sells for less than the same piece in a proper box.

This is where a branded box earns its cost. It is the one place in the business where presentation moves the price.

Mixed and unpredictable stock

You do not choose what comes in. Interiors have to take a chain, a ring and a watch without being cut for any of them, which means pads and cavities rather than seats.

Keeping the two apart

Different colours for pledge and resale is the simplest system there is, and it costs nothing extra when both are ordered in the same run.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make plain and branded boxes in one order?

Yes, and one run keeps the material and colour consistent across both.

What interior suits stock you cannot predict?

A pad and a generous cavity. It takes a chain, a ring or a watch without being cut for any of them.

Can boxes carry a pledge label?

Yes — a recessed or printed label area on the base, planned at drawing stage.

Does a better box actually help resale?

It is the one place in this business where presentation moves the price, which is why most buyers brand the resale box and not the pledge box.
