Navy or black
Under a warm shop light a deep navy is indistinguishable from black at arm's length. If the navy is meant to be seen as navy, it has to be lighter than instinct suggests, and it should be approved under the light the shop actually uses.
That is the single most useful thing to know before specifying this colour.
What it does for the piece
Navy flatters yellow gold and warm stones more than black does, and it is kinder to silver than a true black, which can make silver look grey. Against platinum and white gold the difference from black is marginal.
How it behaves by material
In velvet, navy has real depth and shifts noticeably with the angle of the light. In leatherette it is flat and consistent. In printed board it is the hardest of the dark colours to hold across a long run, because a slight ink shift reads as a different colour rather than a lighter one.
Pairing
Navy takes gold foil better than almost any other ground, and it takes silver foil poorly — the contrast is too low. Blind deboss on navy is quiet to the point of being invisible in a photograph, which may or may not be what you want.
Matching it across a set
A box, a bag and a card in the same colour are three different materials taking the same dye or ink, and they will not match by number. They are matched by eye, and that only works if they are made in one run. Ordering them separately is the single most common reason a set looks slightly wrong.
