What actually causes tarnish
Silver tarnishes from sulphur compounds in the air, and humidity accelerates it. A closed box slows the exchange of air; an open tray does not.
Some materials carry sulphur themselves — certain adhesives, wools and untreated boards. Where silver is the product, that is worth specifying around rather than discovering later.
Closed boxes against open display
For stock that sits, a closed box in a clean lining is the single most effective thing available. For stock on display, accept that it will need cleaning and plan the rotation rather than expecting the packaging to solve it.
Linings and contact
Nacre dulls against a nap. Polished metal scratches against anything abrasive. Both of these are contact problems and both are solved by choosing the lining for the piece rather than for the look.
Where a box has to be velvet for appearance, the contact surface can be different from the rest of the interior.
Storage conditions
Keep boxes in the carton they arrived in, off the floor and out of direct sun, until they are used. Humid store rooms mark linings, and marked linings are usually blamed on the run rather than on the store room.
Anti-tarnish inserts
Treated strips and papers exist and they work for a period rather than permanently. They are worth specifying where stock genuinely sits for months, and they are not a substitute for a closed box.
