Leatherette Shoulder-Neck Boxes

What this construction is

A shoulder-neck box has a base, an inner collar that stands up from it, and a lid that drops over the collar and rests on a visible shoulder. The lid never touches the base wall, so the two can be finished in different materials without the join showing wear.

Leatherette (PU) on this construction, specifically

Leatherette gives the sharpest shoulder line we make, because every visible edge is folded rather than cut. It is the standard specification when the shoulder is meant to be an architectural detail.

Getting the fit right

The collar height decides how positively the lid sits and how far it has to be lifted. A tall collar holds the lid squarely and makes the box feel engineered; a short one is quicker to open and less forgiving of a slightly out-of-square lid.

The mistake to avoid

The visible shoulder is a finished edge on show, and a wrap that is turned unevenly there is the first thing anyone sees. It is the detail to inspect on the sample rather than the interior.

Where it is used

Premium retail where the lid and base are different colours or materials, and any programme where the lid carries the branding and the base is a plain stock item.

Why leatherette (pu)

Leatherette is a polyurethane skin over a woven backing. It gives the grain and the weight of leather at a consistent colour, batch to batch — which matters when a jeweller is reordering a house box for years.

Putting your logo on leatherette (pu)

Leatherette is the most forgiving surface for a logo. Hot-stamp, blind deboss and metal plate all sit well on it, and a fine typeface holds its detail.

Cutting the interior in leatherette (pu)

The skin is wrapped over a rigid shell, so corners stay square and the lid closes on a defined line rather than a soft one.

Wipe with a barely damp cloth. Avoid solvent cleaners, which can lift the surface.
