Rigid Board Shoulder-Neck Boxes

What this construction is

A shoulder-neck box has a base, an inner collar that stands up from it, and a lid that drops over the collar and rests on a visible shoulder. The lid never touches the base wall, so the two can be finished in different materials without the join showing wear.

Getting the fit right

The collar height decides how positively the lid sits and how far it has to be lifted. A tall collar holds the lid squarely and makes the box feel engineered; a short one is quicker to open and less forgiving of a slightly out-of-square lid.

The mistake to avoid

The visible shoulder is a finished edge on show, and a wrap that is turned unevenly there is the first thing anyone sees. It is the detail to inspect on the sample rather than the interior.

Premium retail where the lid and base are different colours or materials, and any programme where the lid carries the branding and the base is a plain stock item.

Board wrapped in paper or textured stock. The lightest and most shippable of the constructions, and the one that gives the widest colour and texture range.

Putting your logo on rigid board

Board is the best surface of all for print. Foil, deboss, spot varnish and flat colour all work, and fine typography holds.

Cutting the interior in rigid board

A board box is built around its insert; the insert is usually a die-cut foam or board platform wrapped in the lining material.

Keep dry. Board recovers from a light knock better than lacquer, but a wet mark is permanent.
