Hinged lid
A hinge opens to a stop and holds the lid there. That is the whole advantage: the box can be held out in one hand and it stays open.
It is the right closure for anything presented in front of someone — a proposal, a handover across a counter. The hinge is a moving part, so it is also the closure with a wear life; on a display box opened twenty times a day that matters, on a gift box it does not.
Magnetic closure
Hidden magnets in the lid and the base. The box shuts with a soft pull and no visible mechanism, which gives the cleanest exterior line of any closure.
It does not hold itself open. For a shipped box it is the better choice — nothing to break, and the lid stays shut in a carton. For a proposal box held in one hand, a hinge is easier.
Drawer
The base pulls out of a sleeve, usually on a ribbon. The piece appears horizontally rather than from above, which changes the whole feel of the opening.
This is the construction brands choose when the unboxing is filmed. The cost is interior space: a drawer needs clearance to slide, so the usable interior is smaller than the same outer size in a hinged box.
Slide
A two-part sleeve where the inner tray slides sideways. Flatter than a drawer and cheaper to make, and it suits thin formats — pendants, chains, cards.
It is the least formal of the closures and the most shippable.
Lift-off lid
A separate lid that comes away completely. The most formal presentation and the oldest — it is what a high-jewellery box does.
Two hands are needed, and the lid has to be put down somewhere. That is either ceremony or inconvenience depending on the setting.
Press stud
A stud through a flap, as on a wallet. It keeps the profile thin, which is why it is used on travel formats and slim gift boxes.
A stud is a wear point — right for a box opened a handful of times, not for a counter box opened all day.
