The setting decides the depth, not the ring
A solitaire is not flat. The measurement that matters is from the bottom of the shank to the top of the stone, and it is the one most often left out of a brief. If the clearance is short the lid presses on the setting; if it is generous the ring sits low and reads smaller than it is.
Send the setting height with the shank width and the box is right on the first sample.
Hinge, magnet or lift-off
A hinged lid opens to a stop and stays open — which is what you want if the box is being held out in one hand.
A magnetic closure gives a cleaner line and a softer sound, but it does not hold itself open. A lift-off lid is the most formal and the least practical in the moment.
For a proposal box, hinged is usually right. For a box that ships inside an outer carton, magnetic travels better.
It will be photographed
Assume the box appears in a photograph before the ring does. That makes the interior colour a real decision: a dark lining throws the stone forward, a pale lining flatters the metal and softens the contrast.
Gloss exteriors photograph beautifully and show fingerprints immediately. If the box is handled before the moment, a matte or a suede finish is safer.
Slim profiles and pocket boxes
A conventional ring box is visible in a jacket pocket. A slim profile — a flat or a slide construction rather than a cube — solves that, at the cost of the classic silhouette when it is opened.
Both are made to order. Which is right depends on whether the surprise or the reveal matters more to your customer.

Frequently asked questions
What size should an engagement ring box be?
Sized from the ring, not from a standard. We need the widest shank the box has to take and the height of the setting. A first sample is cut from those two measurements and confirmed before production.
Can the box be branded inside as well as outside?
Yes. An interior mark is usually a printed lid card or foil on the inside of the lid. On a suede or velvet lining a card holds better than a stamp.
Do you make a matching band box?
Yes — a double box for the pair, or a separate band box in the same material so the two read as a set. Order them together so the colour matches.
Can it be made to hold the ring and a certificate?
Yes, either as a drawer under the ring seat or as a document sleeve in the lid. Tell us the certificate size.
