What chocolate does
It is a warm dark, so yellow and rose gold sit on it beautifully and a piece does not look stark the way it can against black. It reads as considered rather than default, which black cannot.
Where it belongs
Menswear, watches, and any range where the customer is a man buying for himself. Black in those categories can look funereal; chocolate does the same job and looks like a choice.
It is also strong for warm stones — citrine, smoky quartz, cognac diamonds — which black flattens.
How it behaves
It is one of the most forgiving colours on a counter. It shows almost nothing, and in hide it darkens with handling into something better than it started as.
In print it holds well across a run and creases show a lighter brown rather than white, which is far less visible than on black or red.
Where it does not work
Against platinum, white gold and diamonds it is too warm and there is not enough contrast. A cool grey or a black does that job properly and chocolate does not.
Matching it across a set
A box, a bag and a card in the same colour are three different materials taking the same dye or ink, and they will not match by number. They are matched by eye, and that only works if they are made in one run.
