What this construction is

A ribbon-tie box closes with a ribbon wrapped around it and tied, rather than with a catch or a magnet. It makes opening a deliberate act and it is the cheapest way to make a plain box feel like a gift.

A smooth surface lets a ribbon slide off the corner unless it passes through slots. Build the slots in and leatherette is the cleanest ribbon-tie box there is; leave them out and the ribbon ends up in the bag.

Getting the fit right

The ribbon is part of the specification, not an accessory. Width, material and colour are all matched to the box, and a ribbon slot or recess keeps it from sliding off the corner when the box is carried.

The mistake to avoid

A ribbon tied by the shop rather than built into the box comes undone in a bag. Where the ribbon has to hold, it passes through slots in the box rather than simply around it.

Why leatherette (pu)

Leatherette is a polyurethane skin over a woven backing. It gives the grain and the weight of leather at a consistent colour, batch to batch — which matters when a jeweller is reordering a house box for years.

Putting your logo on leatherette (pu)

Leatherette is the most forgiving surface for a logo. Hot-stamp, blind deboss and metal plate all sit well on it, and a fine typeface holds its detail.

Cutting the interior in leatherette (pu)

The skin is wrapped over a rigid shell, so corners stay square and the lid closes on a defined line rather than a soft one.

Wipe with a barely damp cloth. Avoid solvent cleaners, which can lift the surface.
