Leatherette folds at an angle cleanly and every corner is a turned edge rather than a cut one. It gives the crispest hexagon at a sensible cost, which is why most hexagonal boxes we make are in it.

Getting the fit right

Six corners mean six wrapped joins, and the material has to fold at an angle rather than square. That is more work than a rectangle and it is where the price difference sits — not in the shape itself.

The mistake to avoid

A hexagon wastes interior space at every corner. A piece that fits a rectangular box of the same width may not fit the hexagon, because the usable interior is the circle inside the six sides.

Gifting, seasonal ranges and brands that want a shape customers recognise on a shelf. It suits round and coiled pieces better than long ones.

Why leatherette (pu)

Leatherette is a polyurethane skin over a woven backing. It gives the grain and the weight of leather at a consistent colour, batch to batch — which matters when a jeweller is reordering a house box for years.

Leatherette is the most forgiving surface for a logo. Hot-stamp, blind deboss and metal plate all sit well on it, and a fine typeface holds its detail.

Cutting the interior in leatherette (pu)

The skin is wrapped over a rigid shell, so corners stay square and the lid closes on a defined line rather than a soft one.

Wipe with a barely damp cloth. Avoid solvent cleaners, which can lift the surface.
